Gail Reitano immerses us in the daily life of a young Italian American woman, second generation. There is something of Elena Ferrante in Liberata, but without her sometimes dissonant harshness. Here, we are rather in a comfortable novel, very "feminine", with beautiful feelings, family secrets revealed but without ever falling into mawkishness, nor into ordinary romance.

I loved this novel that is both engaging and informative about the Great Depression and Italian culture. The characters are endearing and you wonder how she will get through it. It's been a long time since I've been a little sad to leave a world and its characters at the end of a novel.

This is a novel that totally surprised me because I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. It seduced me, enthralled me and conquered me to the point that I couldn't let go.
